Course 3
Knowledge to Equip Peers for Each Pregnancy Stage
Course 3 prepares peers to support participants who use substances or have a history of substance use across the full reproductive journey: family planning, pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and early parenting. Using motivational interviewing and harm reduction principles, peers learn to guide conversations about reproductive goals, prenatal care, substance use disclosure, and birth planning. The course helps peers understand the physical and emotional changes related to pregnancy and the immense benefits of quality prenatal healthcare. The course also discusses critical moments during labor, delivery, and hospital discharge. Finally, peers will build skills to recognize Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, understand overdose risk, encourage follow-up healthcare visits, and offer support on infant care, bonding, and positive parenting.
