Welcome to Lesson 3 of our training on Ethics, Values, and Boundaries in Peer Recovery Support. So far, we have discussed ethical principles and core values in peer support work. In this lesson, we turn our focus to boundaries—a crucial aspect of maintaining professionalism, ensuring ethical integrity, and fostering healthy relationships with the people we support.
Boundaries define the limits of our professional relationships. They help us create a safe, predictable, and ethical environment where both the peer specialist and the person receiving support can thrive. Without clear boundaries, peer specialists may find themselves in situations that lead to ethical dilemmas, burnout, or harm—even when they have the best intentions.
Throughout this lesson, we will explore different types of boundaries, discuss common challenges, and develop strategies for maintaining professional relationships while honoring mutual respect and lived experience.
