Topic 3: Training and Communication

A key element in the successful implementation of recovery-friendly policies is ensuring that all employees, including managers, are trained and informed about their role in supporting recovery. Effective training programs educate employees on the realities of substance use disorders and provide actionable strategies to foster inclusivity.

Training should cover:

  • Understanding recovery, including the various pathways individuals may take.
  • How to recognize and reduce stigma, focusing on appropriate language and behaviors.
  • How to support colleagues in recovery, including available resources and workplace accommodations.
  • Legal considerations, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and confidentiality guidelines.

In addition to training, clear communication ensures that employees are aware of recovery-friendly policies and how to access available resources. Employers should utilize various channels, such as email newsletters, internal portals, and awareness events, to keep recovery support initiatives top-of-mind.”
