Millions of children experience parental incarceration each year in the US.
- 1.7 million minor children have an incarcerated parent on any given day
- During their childhood, 5 million children experience the incarceration of a resident parent
- An additional 5 million children experience the incarceration of a non-resident parent during childhood
Parallel to the inequities seen in who is incarcerated, significant economic and racial inequities exist in the likelihood that children experience parental incarceration.
Estimate is based on analysis of the National Survey of Children’s Health
