Correctional supervision includes people in prisons and jails as well as people on probation and parole. At year end 2021, about 5,444,900 people were under correctional supervision in the United States, representing a small decrease from the previous decades of mass incarceration. There are about twice as many people supervised in the community as incarcerated in jails or prisons.
