How many women are incarcerated in the US?

Although most incarcerated individuals are men, women’s incarceration has grown at twice the pace of men’s incarceration in recent decades. More women spend time in jails than in prisons. Jails are less likely than prisons to offer appropriate health care, and it harder to stay in touch with family members from jails compared to prisons.
